Summer school in Vienna, Budapest, Bergamo and Venice

Adaptive Reuse of Contemporary & Heritage Sites  in Hungary
Conservation and Adaptive Reuse in Italy


From 11th to 25th July, 2017.


The summer school is a fruitful cooperation between the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Faculty of Architecture, Department of Industrial and agricultural Building Design, in Hungary, with the University of Bergamo in Bergamo, Kore University of Enna in Enna in Italy and the Department of Architecture in the Higher Technological Institute, 10th of Ramadan City.
The applicants will have the opportunity to travel between 5 different cities in Europe in four different countries, Budapest, Vienna, Bergamo, Milan and Venice. By which they will experience the architecture and urban design and planning in Hungary, Austria, and Italy. The summer school stay will be divided between Budapest and Bergamo with special 1 day field trip and excursions to Vienna and Venice.

The school will deal with the notions of adaptive reuse of contemporary and heritage sites in Hungary and Italy, with special focus on architecture building technologies in Hungary and the multi-disciplinary approach of conservation in Italy. The summer school is done under the supervision of Professor. Antonella Vercasi, Kore University of Enna and Professor. Alessio Cardaci, University of Bergamo. And Associate Professor. Zsolt Vasáros, Faculty of Architecture, Budapest University of Technology and Economics. 

  Introduction

  Description
The summer school introduces the most important theories of the Adaptive Reuse and Conservation tools and techniques. By which the applicant will get to know the theoritical background of conservation and how is adaptive reuse is a tool to apply conservation on heritage and histroical buildings. Also, undergoing reuse case study projects in Budapest and Venice is essential to give a full prespective for the applicant's knowledge. Also, a visit to the UNESCO office in Venice to know the latest technologies and tools used for conservation and adaptive reuse in Italy such as 3D laser scanning and Digital Photogrammetry.

  Who can Apply
To be eligible to apply for the summer school of Adaptive Reuse of Contemporary and Heritage Sites.
  • International applicants with architecture, urban design, urban planning, urban studies, physical planning, arts, philosophy, applied arts, history, civil engineering, social sciences, and geography backgrounds are eligible to apply.
  • Have sufficient knowledge of the language of instruction (English language), as we may ask you to submit a proof of language proficiency or to make a phone call interview with the applicant.
  • Respect the specific criteria and applicable additions for application process.
  How to Apply

1.    Prepare a clear scanned copy of your valid passport
With at least 10 months validity in advance, and use friendly file format such as, JPEG, PDF, TIFF, etc. with maximum size of 2 Megabytes)

4.     After reviewing your application and attached documents you will receive an email from Ktn Egypt to inform you whether you have been accepted to join the program or not. If you did not hear from us within 1 week, please contact us on ktnegypt@gmail.com.

5.     After receiving your acceptance letter from us, proceed with the registration fees payments, please refer to the course fees section.

The fees will be paid after the applicants receive their acceptance letter from the Ktn Egypt.
  • Early fees payment (before the call deadline will pay 90 % fees).
  • Standard fees payment (till 1 week of the call deadline will pay 100 % fees).
  • Late fees payment (till 2 weeks of the call deadline will pay 110 % fees).

  Schedule

- Detailed program will be distributed in the first day of the summer school.
- All lectures are given by the academic staff from both universities of Budapest University of Technology and Economics and the University of Bergamo and Kore University of Enna.
- In case that Ktn Egypt canceled any event in the announced program, there will be a reasonable repayment.
- Announced dates can be changed (plus or minus 2 days) according to flight tickets reservation, as we try always to find the cheapest offer for flights to our applicants. 
  Accommodation
In Budapest the capital of Hungary

The accommodation will be in the BMF student hostel (see also: http://koll.uni-obuda.hu/index.php?tagkoll=kukac), is located 400 m from the Tram line 4 and 6, also 700 m from the Grand Boulevard and the M3 Corvin-Negyed Metro Stop. The hostel rooms will accommodate from 2 to 4 applicants, the rooms have with private bathrooms and a work desk, with a kitchenette as well. Kitchenware for preparing your own meals can be rented at the reception. Breakfast is available on weekdays with extra fees. Free WiFi access is available in the public areas and rooms as well. Laundry is also included but you will need to buy or bring your own washing powders, please ask the receptionist guy for the laundry room key.

BMF hostel is 1 km from the Keleti Railway Station and from the Arena Plaza Shopping Centre. The Puskás Ferenc Stadion can be found within 1.7 km from the Corvin metro station.

The 8th district of Józsefváros is a great choice for travelers interested in city trips, museums and monuments. This is our guests' favorite part of Budapest, according to independent reviews.

In Bergamo (Milan)

  Registration Fees
The total cost of the school is 1550 Euros + Equivalent to 350 USD (for flight ticket) , Including the following,
  • Transportation inside Hungary and Italy.
  • Return flight ticket from Cairo to Budapest. 
  • Medical Travel Insurance for the duration of stay in Europe. 
  • Transportation between Budapest and Bergamo and 1 day field trips to Vienna and Venice with optional trip to Milan.
  • Accommodation (without meals) in Budapest and Bergamo.
  • School tools and facilities.
  • Hungarian Language Course (Intensive course for beginners).
While the fees do not include,
  • Visa costs (Around 90 Euros)
  • Pocket money for Living Costs in Hungary (around 300 Euros) 
Furthermore, the applicants have to bring all the needed documents, such as passports, bank statements, proof of registration, and any further documents as needed by the embassy of Hungary in Cairo.

  • The registration fees must be paid within 2 weeks from the call deadline.
  • Supervisors are more than welcome to accompany 10 applicants or more from the same institution (for more details please contact us).
  • Please notice that we will endeavor to assist you in obtaining the visa from the responsible embassy, by sending an acceptance letter, but the responsibility is yours and the decision rests solely with the appropriate Embassy.
  • Applicants, who are under 21 years old, must submit parents’ acknowledgment form.
  • In case that Ktn Egypt canceled any event in the announced program, there will be a reasonable repayment.
  • Applicants must attend 75 % from the event in order to receive a certificate of participation.
  • Applicants must not leave the event’s city 1 day in advance before the date of departure.

  • Early cancellation (before the call deadline will get 100 % fees back).
  • Standard cancellation (till 2 weeks of the call deadline will receive a refund of minus 20 % ).
  • Late cancellation (More than 2 weeks after the call deadline there will be no fees refund).
